I love NPRs podcast called The Indicator It’s a daily 8-10 minute discussion on a single topic tied to a basic principle in economics. It’s a lot of fun for the non-economic person like me. NPR spun this off of a very popular podcast called Planet Money, also enjoyable but a longer listen.

Whether it is the latest government job report or some human interest topic, they always tie these back to economics principles. Oh yeah, and it is fun to listen to. The two hosts – Stacey Vanek Smith and Cardiff Garcia have a great repore and they make these topics rather enjoyable. I now know what a “reverse yield curve” is (thanks Cardiff) and why it is an important “indicator” of recession in the economy. I have a long commute every day and need to feed my brain rather than stress over my preparation for upcoming meetings.

So I thought more about my blog and I will add some posts using this approach. I don’t have an NPR staff of researchers behind me, so I can’t do this daily, but I think I will take some current events or marketing tools, etc. and discuss how they tie back to the working principle in marketing that would be useful to the practitioner – someone with a day job running a marketing department. Someone who wants to find an edge. I know that marketers have a strong desire for insights and new tools to outsmart, out-compete, or take their career to the next level.

Learning rarely comes from a single blog post or podcast episode. More often it is immersion over time through listening, reading or viewing topics brought by an experienced author or subject expert. Through regular readings, you get a sense of how practitioners think and approach challenges and build creative ideas.

Bringing you that marketing and strategy expertise is my mission. Please subscribe or bookmark and check back frequently.  I guarantee you will learn and build confidence through accumulated knowledge to win in your career.
